Courage Classic training...first ride towing the kids!

Training to ride over 150 miles is hard, especially if you are a flat lander and will ride those miles in the mountains of Colorado!  Since Collin works and I am home with the kids, it is pertinent to make the most of our training time, thus family rides and Mom/Kid rides it is.  So, in an effort to get our miles in and our long rides done, Collin and I decided a bike trailer would be needed.  We have done some research on them before and found what would best suit our needs and grabbed it last week.

So, my first ride towing 70 pounds of my two little ones was good!  I went further than I thought...for my first 'quick' ride to see how the trailer towed with the kids we went 11 miles.

My two little loves...ready to go!  Note the cheesy smile, that's what he does anytime he sees a camera right now!
It was fun to talk to the kids about what we were driving past, fields and vehicles passing us.  They enjoyed stretching their legs when we got out but had great attitudes about it and for that, I am thankful!

Right now, I am training inside with the wind gusts and thankful since I just went to clip-in pedals!

Madelyn's health journey

Madelyn, our first blessing from God, is incredible.  She has a kind, tender heart and a beautiful smile that warms this Mommy's heart.  Here is our family’s journey of Madelyn’s health, it’s long and I have never written it out before.  Here goes...

Madelyn is almost 6 and our story with Children's Hospital Colorado began two weeks after she turned one, on Friday, June 5 at about 7:30pm.  Madelyn vomited quite a bit of blood and we went to our local hospital.  I was home with Madelyn while my husband was helping move our new pastor and his family into their home.  I called my husband and he said he would be right here, thinking I was wrong and that Madelyn had not vomited blood and it was something she ate or something. An acquaintance at the time, Matt Nowland (a family practice doctor and now a close friend who is riding the Courage Classic with us too) was helping move our pastor in and Collin asked him come over and ease my fears.  When they arrived, they both knew it was blood and we needed to get to the hospital...I had no idea what vomiting blood meant but wasn't too wound up yet.  At the hospital, the staff asked about what she had eaten, been exposed to, ran blood work and x-rays and it felt like it took forever...nothing showed up in the x-Ray but her blood work showed her hematocrit was very low so they started a blood transfusion and were sending her to Children's Hospital Colorado via life flight helicopter.  I'm starting to panic now and asked if I could ride, assuming I could. I was told they would ask, when the flight crew arrived to our small town (they were 120 miles from us), I was told I couldn't go since Madelyn was receiving a blood transfusion and they needed two people attending to her.  The gentlemen on the flight crew were wonderful, they told us about their daughters and that they would take care of our Madelyn. One of them even got my cell number and updated me, what a blessing they were!  Collin had gathered a change of clothes from home for us, as it was close to 11pm by now and we knew we would need clothes for the next day.  So, we loaded Madelyn in the helicopter and were right behind her, in our vehicle.  A friend had been traveling back from California and his flights were delayed all day...putting him leaving Denver about the time we had to put Madelyn on the helicopter...so he went to Children's to meet Madelyn off the helicopter and held her until we got there. It didn't take us too long to make the trip, normally 2-2 1/2 hours, but it was the longest 1 hour, 45 minutes.  Once we arrived, Madelyn was upset and we held her in the er...got more x-rays and waited to find out what the next step was.  She was admitted soon and we were moved to a patient room on the 9th floor with a lot of flurry and people (nurses, med students, fellows, lab techs and more) in and out of the room until sometime between 3 and 4am.  Lots of questions, telling everyone what had happened and learning it would be morning before we would know more.

During all of this, we had some incredible people praying for us and loving us and sharing their experiences  through this all.  Friends went to our home after we left the ER for Children’s and cleaned up where Madelyn had gotten sick.  Our parents were ready to make the trip from Texas but we didn’t think it was necessary until we made it to Children’s and started learning it was a bigger issue than we imagined.  By morning (6am or so), we knew we wanted our parents with us. So, my Mom found a flight (Dad stayed with two of my younger siblings, still in school at the time) and Collin’s parents loaded up and started the 1000 mile drive.

Madelyn had another blood transfusion on that Saturday morning and mid-morning we knew she would have an upper endoscopy to see what was going on as x-rays were still not showing anything.  Our new pastor came to see us at Children’s and kept us company while we waited for the procedure, what a blessing as we had no idea what to think or do so we chatted with our new pastor and held our baby girl.  I held and rocked Madelyn as we were in the procedure area waiting for the staff and then they carried her away for the procedure.  The endoscopy felt like it took forever and my Mom arrived from the airport right as Dr. Kramer was sharing his findings.  Dr. Kramer found three varices that needed banding and that was where the bleeding was coming from.  Now that he stopped the bleeding, he could work to find what caused the varices.    Madelyn had medicine to take and ended up with more x-rays as her oxygen levels dropped in the night, due to her swollen esophagus.  Collin’s parents arrived in the middle of the night saturday night.  Side note:  Dr. Kramer was on call that weekend for the Digestive Health Institute. Dr. Kramer is an incredible physician and we have been blessed that he has followed Madelyn for the last five years.  God has a plan, always!

Up next were ultrasounds, cat scans, MRIs and continuous blood work as well as monitoring all input and output from Madelyn.  This took several more days to get complete family medical histories (thankful our parents were there!), run a test, get results, doctors consult, share information with us and decide what test to run next.  Hematology was brought in and we continue to follow-up with them as well, clinic visits and monitoring Madelyn’s blood work.  We grew accustomed to this teaching hospital and were so thankful we could hold our girl, some parents on the same floor could not do that with their children.

Finally, the DHI physicians concluded that Madelyn had deep vein thrombosis, portal vein (a blood clot in her portal vein, the port to her liver) that had dissipated as it is not seen on scans or a malformation of the port itself (this cannot be confirmed without invasive surgery), causing portal vein hypertension, an enlarged spleen and esophageal varices.  The varices are blood vessels that line her esophagus and a result of too much pressure in those veins (they are not made to handle the ‘back up’ pressure they are getting due to the portal vein hypertension and deep vein thrombosis) so they burst into her esophagus, blood ends up in her stomach and it either comes up or goes out in a bowel movement.  The ‘banding’, if necessary, is literally that; a band is put around the bulging vein and it cuts that vein off and her blood finds another route.  Eventually this will allow the blood ways to re-route itself around her body; however, this is also why Madelyn is now a life-long DHI/GI patient.  She will always have endoscopy procedures to see what is actually happening, we pray the procedures continue to be spread out and they will as long as her body is working to re-route her blood and no banding is needed each time.
So, we were dismissed with our girl. Madelyn’s personality changed in those six days, forever.  She was poked and proded too much and didn’t want anyone in her room when it was over.  She signed and constantly told us ‘all done’ when someone new came into the room.  It was heart-breaking to see her change but we were sleep deprived and running on adrenaline, we had no idea what was happening right before our eyes until we could step back weeks later and notice it.

Leaving was hard...Children’s Hospital Colorado had become our security blanket and we longed to feel the security of the staff as we were driving back to our home.  However, I must note that we were so grateful to be able to leave with our daughter, we were mindful of that when we left before some other patients on the same floor, some of whom had been there longer than we had been.  Collin’s mom came to stay with us for a few days to help us get back into a routine.  I was already a stay at home mom and so thankful that I was. Our summer became quite boring...we didn’t go many places and I held Madelyn a lot!  Somedays, that’s all I did and Collin and I were ok with that.  Madelyn and I did take a Parent/Toddler swim class and enjoyed it.  The next three weeks flew by as we had to go back for a follow-up procedure in July, just one month after her first endoscopy.  My parents came for the procedure and we were set to stay in-patient for a night or two after the procedure so Madelyn’s oxygen levels and more could be monitored.  More varices were banded and we were to follow-up again in a month.

So, we went back to Children’s Hospital Colorado in August, banded more varices and then followed-up again in September for another endoscopy.  This time Dr. Kramer decided to lengthen the procedures to 3 months, praise God!  We went back in December for Madelyn’s 5th endoscopy since we began this journey just 6 months before then.

We went another three months and followed-up in March 2010, then again in June 2010 and again in September and December.  Then we got a 6 month break!  June 2011 brought us back to a three month span as there were some varices.  September 2011 was another procedure and then another bleeding episode afterwards.  This scared us, again, so we rushed to the ER again and were sent back to Children’s Hospital Colorado. This time it was in our own car and I had girlfriends that were in Denver on a fun trip that met us and waited in the Children’s ER with us. We followed-up in December 2011 again after the bleeding episode and all was looking good again.

We then went 6 months to June 2012 and we were given a year!!!!!  One year between procedures...wow!  We were thrilled, June 2013 came and we got another year.  That leads us to now, June 2014 we have another endoscopy scheduled for Madelyn.  Madelyn and our whole family will deal with this forever.  Madelyn takes medicine, daily, to keep the acid levels in her esophagus down, thus keeping the risk of varices bursting lower.  Her spleen will always be enlarged and at risk of rupture.  She has a slightly compromised immune system and always will.  Through all of this, God has blessed us immensely.  We bring our daughter home after procedures and only go for clinic visits in between procedures for now.  What we have gone through with Madelyn has allowed us to have compassion for others, no matter the ‘level’ of illness, it’s your child. God has also given us the opportunity to minister to others and for that, we are grateful.  It’s incredible to be able to share some of the ‘tips and tricks’ we have learned over the years that make procedures and hospital stays a little easier.

And that brings us to the last FIVE years of Madelyn’s health.  God’s grace has been with us, always and I am grateful.

Freedom!

God has given us ultimate (ETERNAL) freedom and I am so thankful for his love and mercy.  Independence Day (July 4th) is such a special holiday as we reflect on our country's history and the many men and women that sacrificed to make it a free nation.  THANK YOU to our soldiers (and their families) that serve and protect us!

So, how did we spend the weekend?  Well...we started the weekend coming home from a work trip (we tagged along with Collin to Denver).  Those are nice!  We got to play, see him every night and go to a Rockies game with him!

Collin & Madelyn at the Rockies game
So, we did that for a couple of days and came home Friday to get to work...on Saturday, we hosted Collin's management team, trainees, and families at our home for a cook-out.  So...we (Collin) had a yard to mow and we had food to prep and a house to make pretty!  All of this, we did VERY well and were ready as we watched the storm roll in Saturday evening...and it RAINED on our event.  So, we modified and had dinner inside (burgers, hot dogs and the works) and visited inside until the storm passed.  Then horse shoes and the 'wee' and sand box were used outside!  :)

Sunday brought a fun day...celebrating our freedom with our church family in the morning, napping and heading back to church for the evening Block Party!  It typically goes along with the city's fireworks display and makes for a great show but this year was different...fireworks were postponed until fair time due to delayed wheat harvest.  It was still a WONDERFUL time...great food, games for the kids and fun time visiting!  Madelyn LOVED the evening playing with friends!
Celebrating freedom!

Mommy & Madelyn...Daddy in the side

Monday brought an early day...we took Maggie (she's almost 6 months old now) to the trainer's in Nebraska.  We will see her in a month...for a visit!  Collin is so excited because she'll be back and ready for ALL of pheasant season!  And I am excited that she'll be back for the holidays.  We made the trip easily and had a great drive, stopped to change Madelyn out of pjs at a park that was closed (for the holiday) so we stopped at the closed gate instead.  Once at the trainer's, Maggie was SO EXCITED to see the other dogs and jumped around...a good sign for her attitude there. It was a quick drop off visit and 15 minutes later we were back in the car.  So, we planned to stop at Cabela's on the way home, to get out of the car and enjoyed our time wandering through the store.  I even found some goodies in the 'bargain cave'!  :)  Then we decided to eat our 'picnic' lunch we brought along (since there's not much between here and there) at the pond in front of Cabela's.  They have a nice pond, lots of geese and ducks, and a picnic area.  It was WONDERFUL!  We had a relaxing drive home and still had most of the afternoon...you know, it's amazing how much you can get done when you get up and moving at 5am!

Collin & Maggie
At a 'closed' park in Nebraska, stopping to stretch our legs, change Madelyn and let Maggie get out of the kennel.
She was having fun!  Note the attraction in the background, past the building.

Saying 'bye' to Maggie...see you in a month!

A real picnic...planned and loved it!

She's so HAPPY!  I LOVE this smile!

Hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend too!  Until next time...

Hill girls' mani/pedi time...

Today was the day...we ditched the very light pink (almost an opaque natural) nail polish for a brighter color.  The color so sweet that Daddy & Mommy took such great care in choosing.

Miss Madelyn wanted her toes AND fingers painted with the new color she's been begging for...so we did it!  It's one of my polishes, a coral color and beautiful!  I just didn't think it would be on her toes (nor fingers) yet.

How precious this time to sit together and paint our nails together was.  :) Warms a mommy's heart and makes wonderful memories.

She was so patient and still...except for her body dancing to music.  She tried to keep still and told me it was 'beautiful'!

Daddy stopped in shortly after doing our nails and she told him she had to be careful with her nails since they weren't dry yet!  ;)  When he left, he told her 'bye, girlie girl' and we both laughed, knowing our girl is just that and loving it!

Have a wonderful day!

OK...

I love how God has used Priscilla Shirer (Tony Evans' daughter btw), an incredible author and teacher.  I have done one study with ladies from church, Discerning the voice of God, attended our simulcast church's event...Going Beyond with Priscilla Shirer, and am now doing the study Jonah with other ladies in our church.  And I must say, God has spoken to me through each of these...oh, how I have so much to learn.

So, with grace being something I am seeking (and something that would make my home more pleasant...who am I kidding, my life more pleasant), Priscilla's June 'Jewelry Box' spoke volumes to me.  Oh, how I have a lot to learn and pray that I can work on 'OK' for the next 48 hours and will report back.  :)

My prayer is that God will help me find grace...and be gracious.

**Huge side note...with the announcement of Priscilla's latest book, The Resolution for Women, to be release in September, with the conjunction of Courageous the movie...I am EXCITED!  This 'Jewelry Box' was taken from Priscilla's new book.

Birthday Girl...how beautiful she is!

Madelyn turned 3 on Saturday...WOW!  I really have no idea where this beautiful little girl appeared from...maybe it was in the middle of the night, our toddler disappeared and a little girl woke up!

Collin and I watched her this weekend and she looks 10 to us!  She's longer and leaner, more vocal, has NUMEROUS imaginary friends, loves God and is so much fun.

She had a great day...she woke me up at 6:45am (on Saturday, mind you) saying 'Mommy, it's my birthday!'  :)  Followed quickly by 'Let's make cupcakes.  Pink cupcakes!'  and we did.  We had pink cupcakes in the oven before we discussed breakfast and she was delighted.

The first picture of the day...she was delighted to be making PINK cupcakes!

Daddy joined us shortly and we had breakfast together, after presents!  She was excited and then Daddy needed her help unloading his truck from his trip to WalMart the night before...

Madelyn had phone calls from family and friends.  Text messages and facebook wishes too...how she enjoyed each.  She got to skype with some family too.  :)  And got a video from her one and only cousin...she was so excited and LOVED it!  How wonderful it is to see the delight in her face.

After the sandbox discovery, we loaded up to gather sand at a local place and then she got to play in it!  What a trooper she was all day...working hard and then playing hard to enjoy her sandbox.  What a treasure and blessing she is.

Since turning 3 (you know, two days ago), Madelyn has climbed into and out of her wagon...with the sides on, gone to the potty on her own with no announcement and washing hands thoroughly, and something else...can't remember it at the moment.  All of these things we noted and she told us, 'I am 3 now!' and that's her explanation.

So blessed we are to have her with us.  What a wonderful day!
Thank you God for this incredible miracle!

Off to make more memories with my three year old!  :)

10 years...already?!

Collin and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary last Thursday.  Wow!  10 years...in one thought, it seems like yesterday and in the same thought 1000 years ago!

We had a wonderfully normal and 'us' day!  Collin picked up lunch and we got to each lunch together, a VERY rare treat at our house.  :)  We had a great steak salad for dinner that we all took part in...yummy!
And a banana cheesecake for dessert.  Madelyn helped make this great recipe from Aunt Alice & Fabia...easy and delicious!

Recipe post to come soon...yummy!
Best of all, it's BEEF!

Collin and I talked about the wonderful events 10 years ago and how we still LOVE our wedding!  We also talked about how amazing it is that God has changed us SO MUCH in 10 years.  Who knew that we would be happy in Colorado...while still missing Texas dearly and daily.

We didn't discuss this list, but here's what God has led us through (that I am coming up with right now)...

-Married and I moved to Dalhart with a suitcase, went on our honeymoon to Taos, NM.  We got my car and May (our now 10 year old yellow lab) a week later and some more stuff too!

- Lived in Dalhart for just over 5 years, thinking that was where we were supposed to be until we learned God had a place called Yuma, CO for us!
In Dalhart, we made great friends, missed 'home' (East Texas), worked, I went back to school and finished an MBA, we bought our first home (incredible home), bought my current ride, went through several company trucks, spent LOTS of time and money in Amarillo, played LOTS of golf, bought the Jeep (Collin's '79 CJ-7), I had a new ACL in my knee thanks to a not so great skiing trip to CO (thanks Mom and Dad...or is it the Franks' family since they recommended the place?), had a great church home and people that loved us and cared for us.  We also had lots of ups and downs...growing every step of the way!  :)  And I thank God we grew closer together through it all!

- Checked out an AGM job in CO and MOVED!  WHAT?!  To Colorado?!  Most of you know, it wasn't our ideal but the best decision for us at the time.  Well, not our 'ideal' turned out to be so much more!  It's wonderful how allowing God's plan to happen and following it is so much more rewarding than we could have ever imagined our plan to be.  (Not without hardships, of course.  We are human and live in an earthly world).  We have made wonderful friends, found a fantastic church home (funny thing happens when you change your attitude...more on that in another post), drive an hour to WalMart, spend a lot of time on the Front Range, discovered the Rocky Mountains, brought MADELYN home, found out how important our family is and how nothing else matters and COMPLETELY shifted our priorities, focus and cares.  Added a new yellow lab, Maggie, to our family.  And oh, how we know that God has us right where He wants us.  What a blessing!

Most of you may know this verse, but here is something special to my heart thinking of our anniversary...
'Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,
does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,
does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with truth;
bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails...'
I Corinthians 13:4-8

Wow!  How amazing our life together has been.  That young man I met 15 years ago is still in love with me and I with him...and we love our family!

It's late and I MUST get some sleep...according to everyone that I have skyped with lately!  I think they are politely telling me I look bad!  Love you MOM and DAD!  :)  So, I will leave you with this incredible picture of our family of three last weekend at my cousin, Jessica's beautiful wedding in the Hill Country of Texas...Kerrville, Texas to be exact!

Good night for now...more soon!
